“CID - Central Organ for the Interests of All Dissidents” is an avant-garde hip-hop group consisting of Trackscan (J.-M. Printschler) and Black Saturn (N. Jackson). Their debut album “Opium”, released on LOWHOP-Records, captivates with its minimalist clarity paired with playful sophistication. Deep, dub-hop-infused beats move at an unhurried pace, while delicate, almost fragile melodies sway in the background, as the bass drives through with relentless force. In between, above, and beneath, Black Saturn’s lyrics shine, highlighted by his distinctive voice and unmistakable style.
The album opens with the track “Seeds of A Plot,” which immediately sets up the narrative journey of the 26-minute runtime. It’s clearly a concept album—a format that rarely disappoints. The second track, “Down to the Plastic,” evokes memories of the celebrated hip-hop of the 90s—only dirtier, more honest, more direct, and somehow different. Perhaps that’s exactly what makes the album so fascinating: it resists easy classification, yet feels like it was always meant to be this way—or maybe it’s been that way all along? The third track, “Once A Victim,” marks a turning point, as with this song alone, the entire album feels grand, even before hearing the rest.
With “Dub Intermission,” Trackscan and Black Saturn return to their roots, somewhere in that undefined space between hip-hop and dub. Finally, the album also features “Paradox,” “Prospective,” “Lady Chin Part I,” and “Lady Chin Part II.” Each track is undoubtedly outstanding. We believe it’s one of those albums that you sit back and take in from start to finish—or at least, that’s what we recommend…
